Holter Monitor
A Holter monitor is small portable ECG device that records your heart rate and rhythm for an extended length of time – usually one to several days.
What to Expect
- You will be asked to remove everything from the waist up (females will be provided a medical gown).
- A baseline ECG will be performed (see Electrocardiogram section for more information).
- Five stickers called electrodes will be applied to your skin on your abdomen and chest and will remain in place for the duration of your study (usually 24 to 72 hours).
- The electrodes attach to wires connected to the Holter monitor.
- The Holter monitor can be secured to your person via a carrying pouch or clipped to your clothing.
- The electrodes and wires will remain connected, and the monitor will remain with you until the end of your study.
- An instruction sheet and diary will be provided to you, and you may use this to document any symptoms or issues you may experience during your study and also reference the instruction sheet for what day and time you must return the monitor to our office.
- A case will be provided to you for you to place the monitor and diary in upon completion of the study.
- There is a drop box for monitor returns located outside, next to the front doors of our office for your convenience.
Preparation Instructions
- Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your exam time with your health care card.
- If you have any symptoms of virus, cold or flu please inform our staff prior to your appointment.
- If you have any mobility concerns, please inform our office prior to your appointment.
- There are no fasting requirements for this appointment.
- Please arrive with clean, dry skin(if you have a lot of lotion, oils, or powders on your skin the electrodes may not adhere as they should).
- You may be asked to remove jewelry from your neck and arms.
- You will not be able to shower or get the monitor wet while you are wearing it.
- You will have to return the monitor promptly upon completion of study at the specified day and time.
